Well over 1000 meals at Kopitiam, plus donations, put-up a fund for typhoon-ravaged Philippines that stood at an impressive K40, 218.80 when it was handed over to the Filipino Association of PNG (FAPNG).
Last November 23 and 24, PNG Kopitiam restaurant played host to the fundraising, an initiative from the NWTL top management, who generously said they will donate 100% of all sales on those days to help relieve and re-build typhoon-stricken Philippines.
Typhoon Haiyan (Philippine name Yolanda) was the world’s strongest ever typhoon to make landfall. It smashed through Leyte and Samar islands of the Philippines on November 8. It had winds of over 280kph, with maximum gustiness of up to 480 kph. Over 6000 lost their lives and millions were left homeless.
Posters were displayed in all Trophy Haus, Kwik Mart and Fone Haus outlets. Additionally, more than 20 other companies and establishments also helped by displaying the posters in their offices,
including two restaurants.
Apart from just eating out to help the worthy cause, customers placed amounts of cash in the donation box provided, and were given the chance to write down sympathy messages.
The menu included Beef Rendang with rice, Yang Chow Fried Rice, Malaysian Prawn Noodle Soup and Mixed Veggies, all sold at K30 with a free drink.
Volunteers included managers and staff from Kwik Mart, Fone Haus, Trophy Haus, HR &Admin, and the Accounts department who gave a hand in the kitchen and waited tables.
The cheque was presented to Roel Sta.Cruz, president of the Filipino Association of PNG (FAPNG Inc.) on Thursday 28th November, 2013, at the newly renovated Sea View Restaurant. The event was witnessed by Pablito Mendoza, Consul of the Philippine Embassy.
The funds-raised stood at K40,218.80. The money was sent to ChildFund Philippines, a branch of ChildFund International, which is a global organisation dealing with rehabilitation of people affected by natural disasters, especially the children who need utmost care and nurturing.
